The first thing would be that my mouth would change into having a permanent smile on it! I would be very happy and proud if I won!

You can see in my profile here: http://ias.im/u.9603 how I plan to spend the money. The main change in my life is that I would be able to do more science “outreach work”, which is stuff like I’m A Scientist where you talk with students and the public about science and answer all their questions. I think this is important as the public basically pays for science, as my wages come from taxes. So it is important to tell tax payers what we are doing. Also, I think everyone, even if they are not a professional scientist, is curious about how things work and would love to ask questions to scientists. So hopefully in that way other peoples’ lives would be changed – that would be the best thing in my opinion. 🙂

If I won I would try to advertise the fact through the news team at university so that the charity I want to give the money to gets as much publicity as possible!

If I won, I would be very happy! Very very happy 🙂
And I would immediately tell everyone I work with – they have been very interested in I’m a Scientist and like thinking about all the questions you are all asking too. Then I promised I would buy them all a drink if I won – so immediately I would be a little poorer, but happier!

I would also contact the university press team as they love this kind of stuff and it publicises science and science outreach really well and the more people who know about it the more people will do things like “I’m a Scientist”. Hopefully as a result more people will appreciate science and have a better understanding what us scientists do.

With the winnings, I plan to go and visit the schools who have taken part and talk about science and do some biochemistry and chemistry experiments with them. I will also use some of the money to support students who are interested in studying biochemistry so they could attend some of the courses run at Oxford University that show students what studying biochemistry would be like. I would specifically sponsor a course that was aimed at students from comprehensive schools (there are quite a few courses like this) as I think they are less likely to consider applying to Oxford, so in addition to finding out how amazing biochemistry is they could also see if they like Oxford. Oxford has a certain image that isn’t always fair, but no one can argue that the quality of the degree is fantastic – the undergrads here learn some amazing things that I never learnt at uni!

Basically if I won, I’d be a lot busier telling people about the amazingness of Biochemistry! 🙂

Just to see the smiles on young peoples faces when they see things happening to food which they never thought possible would change my life, knowing i’d made a difference to others!
Like the other scientists i plan on spending the money by showing and helping young people into an industry which not many people know about, and by showing them that food is more than something that you just eat! 🙂
You can read my profile for more info on what i’d do if i won!
