Well hopefully “I’m a Scientist” will help us with that one! I think I’d also set up a FaceBook page and a Twitter page. My University has a communication department that works with journalists, so I’d ask for their help, and perhaps also ask the Royal Institution for help in telling interested students. My idea on what to spend the prizemoney on will hopefully be useful to learning, so I would also contact exam boards to see how it can fit in with what you need to learn.

Hi @mallfunbunny. Well one thing I would love to do is visit schools and talk to people like you. If I win I’m a Scientist tell your teacher to invite me and I’ll come and talk to you guys about astronomy (neutron stars, black holes, space flight, aliens, whatever you like!) if you like.

I am already on Twitter (I’m @evanocathain if you’re interested) and use that to talk about astronomy (and other things!) but I would use the money to buy some equipment like a microphone and camera so I can set up a youtube channel to make astronomy videos and do podcasting.

Also I will definitely buy a few telescopes. You can get a GREAT telescope for like £100 on Amazon or somewhere like that. I would use these to show people the sky. For instance I can bring a few telescopes into a city centre and anyone passing by can come and look in the telescope! If I was doing this tonight I’d be showing everyone Saturn which is very easy to see in the sky right now, even with your eyes (!) but with a telescope you can see the rings and weather patterns. I think many people have never seen this for themselves and would like to, and would love to do this.

Even if I don’t win I plan to tell plenty of people about my science! Often when I meet someone new I’ll tell them about the work that I do but also things like “I’m a Scientist” and other work on the internet, in magazines like “New Scientist” or even on TV (I was once on the Gadget Show with my research group and our human powered submarines)!
