I think it was E. coli.

I don’t know very much about it but some people suggested that it could have come from organic fertilizer (animal manure). There could be loads of reason why it effected women more than men. The E. coli bacteria could have evolved to be more dangerous to women or it could simply be that women eat more salad then men!

Yes it was an E.coli infection from contaminated food, most probably contaminated bean sprouts. The investigators weren’t sure how the bean sprouts became infected, but as Ryan says one idea was from organic fertilzer, I also heard that they thought a batch of seeds may have had E. coli on thme. And again they thought there were more women were sick because they eat more bean spouts. Bean sprouts also aren’t cooked at a high temperature for very long so the bacteria wouldn’t have been killed.

It was E. Coli, and it was here in Germany, where I live. Ryan and Ailsa have already given good answers but I just wanted to share a tweet I saw about this on twitter by somebody called Daniel Tatarsky

“In 1 week 18 die from eating cucumbers, everyone stops eating cucumbers. Every single week 100,000 die from smoking. No one stops. We’re nuts.”
