I remember testing some cooking oil that had been used to measure its Free Fatty Acid % (this is an indicator of oil degradation). You heat the oil on a hot plate with Ethanol. You are supposed to stir it all the time and not let it get too hot. On this occasion i wasnt paying much attention, and when i lifted the beaker from the hot plate, the bottom fell out of it splashing hot oil and ethanol everywhere. It was only a matter of time before the the bench had caught fire. When the alarms went off and everyone had to leave the building, i blamed the lab assistant. I still get reminded of it on a weekly basis!!! 🙁

I really can’t think of something naughty that I’ve done since I’ve been a scientist here! We’re pretty free to do whatever we like so there’s not many rules to break!

I’ve been a scientist in this job for 2 years now, but I’d say I’ve been a scientist since I was 3 or 4 years old in some ways!

I guess I’ve been doing science in some way since I left school 9 years ago but I’ve been a paid scientist of some kind or other for the last 5 years.
